Sing|Bird Project

I occasionally looked over the smiling heads of my students to the fence behind them – barbed wire. The image of a caged bird came to mind.

But now I know why the caged bird sings.

I was deeply moved by my experience teaching, learning, and performing saxophone in Afghanistan in February 2015. I decided to put together a recital in honor of the Afghan people and the opportunity they gave to me. This recital that celebrates saxophone music with a distinctly vocal quality, which is a quality much revered in both Afghan and Amerian music. This project will culminate in a concert in Kalamazoo (September 2016).
